How UTK GPA is calculated

UTK uses a standard 4.0 scale. Grade points are weighted by credit hours, then divided by total credits attempted.

Grade Point Scale
4.0 maximum

A+/A = 4.0 · A- = 3.7 · B+ = 3.3 · B = 3.0 · B- = 2.7 · C+ = 2.3 · C = 2.0 · C- = 1.7 · D+ = 1.3 · D = 1.0 · D- = 0.7 · F = 0.0. P/NP courses are excluded.

FAQ

UTK GPA Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about how GPA works at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

UTK uses a standard 4.0 scale. Your GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade points for each letter grade by the number of credit hours in that course, summing all grade-point products, then dividing by total credit hours attempted. A+ and A both equal 4.0, A- equals 3.7, B+ equals 3.3, and so on down to D- at 0.7 and F at 0.0. Pass/No Pass courses are not included in GPA calculations.

To be eligible for the Dean's List at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, you generally need a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher while completing a full-time course load (typically 12 or more credit hours). Individual colleges may have slightly different requirements, so check with your specific college at UTK for exact criteria.

UTK awards graduation honors based on your cumulative GPA at graduation. Cum Laude is awarded for a GPA of 3.5 to 3.69. Magna Cum Laude is awarded for a GPA of 3.7 to 3.89. Summa Cum Laude — the highest distinction — is awarded for a cumulative GPA of 3.9 or higher. These honors appear on your diploma and official transcript.

UTK requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Students whose GPA falls below 2.0 may be placed on academic probation. Students on probation who do not raise their GPA above 2.0 in subsequent semesters may be suspended. Individual programs — particularly professional programs like nursing, engineering, and business — often have higher minimum GPA requirements.

To calculate your cumulative GPA, you need your total grade points and total credit hours attempted across all semesters. Add together the grade points from every semester (grade point value × credit hours for each course), then divide by the total number of credit hours attempted. The Cumulative GPA toggle in this calculator lets you enter your previous GPA and credit hours to see how your current semester changes your overall standing.

No — Pass and No Pass grades do not count toward your GPA at UTK. Courses taken on a Pass/No Pass basis are not included in GPA calculations, though they do count toward total credit hours for degree progress. This calculator automatically excludes P and NP grades from the GPA computation while still displaying them in your course list.

Most lecture courses at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville carry 3 credit hours. Laboratory courses typically add 1 credit hour, making a lecture-plus-lab sequence 4 credits. Seminars and one-credit activity courses carry 1 hour. Upper-division and graduate courses often carry 3 credits. Full-time enrollment at UTK is defined as 12 or more credit hours per semester.

The fastest way to raise your GPA depends on how many credits you have completed. Early in your college career (under 60 credits), one strong semester can meaningfully move your cumulative GPA. Later on, you need sustained high-semester GPAs to overcome earlier lower grades because the larger credit base dilutes each semester's impact. The most effective strategies are: retaking courses where you earned a D or F (UTK's academic fresh start and repeat policies may allow grade replacement — check with your registrar), maximizing performance in high-credit courses, and using tools like Lunora to generate targeted practice questions from your actual course materials so you walk into every exam prepared.
